I headed to Snowbird Resort in Utah last winter to photograph their Avalanche Mitigation Patrol Team in action. I had a blast!!! Jokes! I spent the day last winter with the resort’s patrollers, documenting how they survey and control the entire in-bounds area of the mountain from the threat of avalanches every day before the mountain opens to the public . Flew in the night before, woke up at like 3:30am to over a foot of new snow overnight, met up with the patrol team in pitch black dark and 20 degree temps, and we were throwing bombs on at the top of the mountain by... 6-7am. What a goddamn way to wake up. Was a really really incredible and physically demanding dream assignment doing all of my favorite things. Thank a patroller next time you’re on the slopes; they work incredibly hard to keep us all safe.
