The sailboats that race in the 2013 America's Cup are 72 foot, 6 ton masses of winged, sculpted carbon fiber. Part artwork, part machine, they’re a hundred Ferraris welded together. Slicing through the water, they travel faster than the wind itself, reaching speeds upwards of 45 knots.
The sheer speed, movement, and physicality of the sport's racing boats has placed new athletic demands on its sailors. I spent time with Oracle Team USA, the sport’s defending champions, to document the squad’s sailing-specific, Crossfit-inspired workout routines, as the group trains towards peak physical fitness, day in and day out.
