Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance (Der Stern)

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is a vintage auto show that takes place across the golf course greens, horse stables, and moneyed streets of Carmel, California every August. Here, on this patch of coastal wealth, the 1% of the 1% gather to buy, sell, and admire the most rare automobiles in the world.

The pièce de résistance of this year's show was a bright red 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, one of 37 ever made, which sold at Bonham's Quail Auction for 34.6 million USD. I spent two days visiting auctions, parties, and auto exhibits, equally captivated by the cars and the ostentatious culture of wealth that surrounds them.
